Redefining Medicine: Restoring Faith in Your Own Body

I’ve always loved science. I want to know why things work. That curiosity fuels everything I teach - and everything I practice. Early on, I realized I didn’t resonate with the title “yoga teacher.” Something about it didn’t fit. Too much “woo.” Too much “guru.” I didn’t want to be put on a pedestal. I wanted to stay grounded in the scientific method and empower people to find out for themselves what feels best for them.

That’s why I stepped into the role of health coach. Coaching is client-centered. 

In this relationship, I don’t heal you - you heal yourself.

But here’s the harsh truth: our medical system doesn’t help you do that. It’s stuck in sick-care. It waits until we’re broken, then prescribes drugs, surgeries, or expensive treatments. It spends almost no time teaching us how to prevent illness in the first place. Instead, it reinforces the passive patient model: show up when you’re sick, wait for the expert to fix you, often with a magic pill that comes with nasty side effects.

But you and I both know that's messed up.

Medicine is not just pharmaceuticals. Medicine is the sun, food that nourishes, movement that keeps your body supple and strong, breath that regulates your nervous system, and time in nature that restores your spirit. Connection, rest, joy - these are medicine too. Science is finally proving what ancient traditions have always known: our bodies are designed to heal themselves when given the right conditions.

 

Science Is Proving What We’ve Always Known

Thanks to stunning advancements across all fields, science is catching up with why these ancient practices are so powerful. A few examples:

  • Mind and Brain: Meditation changes the brain - not just while practicing, but structurally. fMRI research shows increased connectivity in attentional networks after only a few weeks of training (Nature Scientific Reports, 2021). Other MRI studies reveal thicker cortical regions and reduced amygdala reactivity, improving stress resilience and emotional regulation (PMC, 2024). Meta-analyses confirm consistent changes in regions tied to attention, self-awareness, and emotion regulation (Wikipedia summary with sources).

  • Fascia: Once dismissed as “just connective tissue,” fascia is now recognized as a dynamic sensory and structural system, and is beginning to reveal the how behind so many "alternative medicines". Recent reviews highlight its role in proprioception, pain regulation, and injury recovery (Frontiers in Medicine, 2024). Other researchers are even proposing fascia as its own anatomical system, with four distinct “organs” (superficial, musculoskeletal, visceral, and neural fascia), reflecting its essential role in movement and healing (Fascia Guide, 2024).

These breakthroughs prove that self-healing isn’t wishful thinking - it’s evolutionary biology we can now measure with modern data.

 

Your Body Already Knows How to Heal

This is where I want to restore your faith:

You are not fragile. 

You are not broken.

You are a brilliant, self-healing organism, the product of millions of years of evolution. Things go wrong not because your body is flawed, but because you’ve been taught to override its signals. To push through exhaustion. To numb pain instead of understanding it. To silence cravings instead of interpreting them.

The truth is, there is no one perfect diet, exercise routine, or lifestyle. What works for your best friend may not work for you. What worked for you last year may not be right for you today. Healing begins with learning to listen - to know when your body needs rest, when it craves movement, when food nourishes, and when stress overwhelms.

My mantra: remain skeptical until you have evidence from your own body.
